Gabriel Project Mumbai Welcomes Second Cohort of Touro Dental Students to Mokhada

Gabriel Project Mumbai (GPM) is proud to welcome the second contingent of dental students and faculty from Touro University College of Dental Medicine to the tribal region of Mokhada, Maharashtra. This dedicated team has traveled from Touro’s New York and Albuquerque campuses to provide essential emergency dental care to hundreds of people living in remote villages—many of whom have never had access to a dentist.

Working in close partnership with dental students and supervisors from the SMBT Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, the third-year Touro students are spending an intensive week delivering critical treatments, including extractions, scaling, restorative procedures, and diagnostic care for patients suffering from severe and long-neglected dental conditions.

One of the most striking aspects of the program has been the diversity of the student body and the way it has enriched the collaboration in the field. Akash Patel from GPM shared his admiration for the team:

“It was incredible to see students from so many different backgrounds-dentists from Kuwait, a Vietnamese-American student, a Palestinian dental student, and two Orthodox Jewish students - all working side by side. Despite their different cultures and life experiences, they came together seamlessly with a shared purpose: to serve.”

Monica, a student from Touro’s New York campus and the only female participant in the cohort, was especially moved by her connection with the local professionals:

“Meeting and working alongside the all-women Indian dental team from SMBT was incredibly inspiring. It felt empowering and affirming to be part of a global community of women committed to improving health care access.”

Thaiza Dias, GPM’s Senior Manager, expressed deep admiration for the commitment and stamina of both the international and Indian dental teams:

“I was amazed watching the dentists stand for hours, performing extractions, scaling, and other treatments for villagers - many of whom had never seen a dentist before. Some cases were complex and time-consuming, but the collaboration between the international and Indian teams was seamless and inspiring.” She adds: “We brought all our equipment into the villages and were even able to conduct X-rays on site. That made a huge difference in diagnosing and treating patients properly in such remote settings.”

Dr. Rob Weber, Associate Professor at Touro University College of Dental Medicine, who led both the first cohort in February and the current delegation, reflected on the broader vision behind the program:

“This is exactly what we at Touro have dreamed of - training student dentists while making a real and immediate impact on the health of underserved communities. To see our students helping so many people who have no access to dental care is deeply fulfilling. Working hand in hand with our SMBT colleagues also means that patients with more complicated needs can receive follow-up care at their clinics, ensuring continuity and dignity in treatment.”

Great News! Announcing an Landmark Partnership with the Government

Gabriel Project Mumbai is proud to announce a landmark partnership with the Health Department of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) a government agency -to expand and strengthen healthcare services at GPM’s Shravan Health Center, located in the heart of the Kalwa slums.

After eight years of operating the only community medical clinic inside the Kalwa slums, GPM’s work has been recognized at the highest levels. The TMC has approached us to join forces—an extraordinary testament to the impact we have created together with the community. This is a powerful example of how dedicated grassroots work by a non-profit can inspire government partnership and trust.

What This Partnership Means

Under this new collaboration, TMC is significantly expanding the clinic’s capacity and services:

  • Extended Hours: The clinic will now run full-time, 10:00am–6:00pm, under TMC management.
  • More Professional Medical Staff: TMC will staff the OPD (Out-Patient Department) with its own doctors, nurses, a full-time pharmacist – as well other on site and outreach medical support staff
  • Increased supply of medication. Our pharmacy will be fully stocked by the government approved drugs and offered to patients at drastically reduced prices
  • Strengthening Preventive Care: Weekly immunization camps will continue, along with expanded health awareness sessions on nutrition, breastfeeding, menstrual health, and more.
  • Maternal & Child Health: New programs will support pregnant women, new mothers, and young children, with a focus on antenatal care and early childhood wellbeing.
  • Community Outreach: A team of community health nurses will actively reach out to families across Kalwa’s densely populated lanes.

TMC will cover all healthcare-related operational costs, while GPM will continue to contribute by management and maintenance of the facility, by supporting a medical coordinator, and ensuring safe drinking water for patients and staff.

Impact: Tripling the Number of People Treated

This partnership dramatically expands the scale of care we can offer.

Until now, Shravan Health Center treated an average of 33 patients a day—about 12,000 people a year. With TMC’s larger medical team and resources, we expect to treat 100 patients a day or more—over 36,000 people annually.

This is three times the number of individuals receiving essential healthcare.

Why This Matters

When quality healthcare becomes accessible, its benefits trickle down to all areas of life; entire communities transform:

  • Children stay healthy and can attend school regularly
  • Adults can work, earn, and support their families
  • Pregnant women receive lifesaving antenatal care
  • Babies are born healthier
  • Families experience long-term wellbeing and stability

The ripple effects will be exponential, health being a key indicator to combat extreme poverty.

A Moment of Pride and Gratitude

We are deeply grateful to the Thane Municipal Corporation for recognizing GPM’s long-standing commitment and for choosing to partner with us. This collaboration affirms that our work is trusted, valued, and making a real difference.

Most importantly, it means that additional tens of thousands vulnerable residents of Kalwa will now have access to more comprehensive, professional, and dignified healthcare.

More health services. More impact. More healthy lives.

Introducing DigiClass: A Bold Leap Forward for Education in the Kalwa Slum

At Gabriel Project Mumbai (GPM), we’ve always believed that quality education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Since 2012, our team has been working in the heart of Mumbai’s Kalwa slum to support children through an integrated approach combining education, healthcare, and nutrition. Now, we are proud to announce our most innovative initiative yet—one that marks a turning point in how education is delivered to underserved communities.

The DigiClass Education Network: Soft launch July, full launch August 2025

The DigiClass Education Network is a pioneering digital education model designed to empower 150 children in Grades 1 through 6 with the tools, confidence, and skills they need to succeed in high school and beyond.

This initiative builds on over a decade of educational impact and is specifically tailored to address the challenges and aspirations of students growing up in some of the most marginalized conditions in India.

What DigiClass Will Offer

  • Smart classrooms equipped with high-speed internet
  • Personal tablets for each student, integrated with a custom Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Engaging digital platforms, including Duolingo ABC, Duolingo English for Schools, and the renowned Israeli math platform, Mathica
  • An expanded teaching team of fully trained, tech-savvy local educators
  • Global enrichment sessions led by experienced international volunteers
  • Monthly health checkups and quarterly educational excursions for holistic child development

DigiClass isn’t just a tech upgrade. It’s a bold step toward educational equity, opening doors for children who have been systematically excluded from the digital learning revolution.

Why DigiClass, and Why Now?

In 2024, GPM conducted a comprehensive assessment of our education programs. The findings were clear and urgent:

  • Students lacked digital literacy—a key skill for 21st-century success
  • Many were struggling with math and language basics
  • Classrooms needed to be more engaging and student-centered

Global research shows that digital learning, when implemented thoughtfully, can dramatically improve student performance—especially in underserved areas. DigiClass is our answer to that call.

Help Us Make It Happen

To fully launch DigiClass and reach 150 students in Kalwa, we are raising $110,000. Your support will help cover:

  • Tablets, smart boards, and educational software
  • Salaries and training for our growing teaching staff
  • Health care and enrichment activities for every student
  • Upgraded technology infrastructure for all classrooms

This is more than a funding appeal. It’s an invitation to transform lives. Every contribution helps change the trajectory of a child’s future—offering dignity, opportunity, and lasting hope.

Join Us in Bridging the Divide

DigiClass represents a new era in education for India’s urban slums, one rooted in equity, innovation, and community. With your support, we can level the playing field and ensure that no child is left behind simply because of where they were born.

Thank you for being a part of this journey.
