Born in a remote village called Telipada in the Mokhada tribal district, Kalyani was also very small for her age and could pass for a five-year old.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3uYZ4JdTBMCfTbu3A4ud_XdUCSpFp0fYjYm6Qwy-6Vv8WF7kmvR9hKlYYyWHshyD5_4-60uK38AMmj1fg_WDPcDNucuQ3WBrbpTAFIWuXsSNegIYMpBkothaKvMhYY4oLDKza2pMXEFlLhg7v68zuh_K5_Eo39g5jes4Tl2uGtsnNdk4bpR8E3KFU978/s911/Kalyani%20IA%20pic%20in%20hospital.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="776" data-original-width="911" height="341" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3uYZ4JdTBMCfTbu3A4ud_XdUCSpFp0fYjYm6Qwy-6Vv8WF7kmvR9hKlYYyWHshyD5_4-60uK38AMmj1fg_WDPcDNucuQ3WBrbpTAFIWuXsSNegIYMpBkothaKvMhYY4oLDKza2pMXEFlLhg7v68zuh_K5_Eo39g5jes4Tl2uGtsnNdk4bpR8E3KFU978/w400-h341/Kalyani%20IA%20pic%20in%20hospital.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>The day Kalyani and her mother came into our medical clinic, we happened to have some very special guests: a group of five Israeli doctors, led by Dr. John Borowski of the Maccabi Health Services. They had come to India on a pilot visit to plan a medical collaboration with GPM and a local medical school.<p></p><p>When Kalyani’s mother rushed in, Dr. Borowski was brought in for a consultation. And what a good thing he was! After a thorough investigation, Dr. Borowski sent photos of Kalyani’s skin to one of Israel’s leading dermatological specialists, Dr. Eve Finkelstein of Hadassah Hospital, who is known around the world for her ability to diagnose and treat difficult cases. Dr. Finkelstein recognized the condition and offered a course of treatment, one that had not yet been tried. Over the following months, Kalyani was treated according to the doctors’ instructions, while also receiving treatment for Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) via the the GPM child malnutrition program. During those months, Dr. Borowski routinely checked in Kalyani from Israel to monitor her progress and report to his colleague.</p><p>And a wonderful thing happened. Over the course of a few months, Kalyani’s face almost entirely cleared up from rashes and her hair started to grow back. </p><p>But there is still a problem. Although the eczema was mostly cleared from her face, her body is still covered with unsightly rashes and skin irritations.</p><p>Once again, our medical staff consulted with their Israeli colleagues and together decided on a course of treatment. Last week GPM staff admitted Kalyani to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for further treatment. It is going to take some time, but with love and attention of the medical staff caring for her – in India and in Israel – we are all confident that 2024 will be a time of great healing for Kalyani, as well as her family and all the children in GPM’s care.</p><p>At GPM, we are incredibly proud of our relationship with our cherished Israeli partners – and we look forward to many healing partnerships going forward.</p><p>For information and/or to donate to GPM's program to improve the antenatal care of tribal women with high-risk pregnancies, <a href="https://rootfunding.com/campaigns/save_women_and_babies" target="_blank">click here</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://rootfunding.com/campaigns/save_women_and_babies" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3ETocTAZ8i0b2aCzsH5JaGmRy3bj21wgTw10Wfmdkuh-aZvbUPjCj058Inv_7ix4-TRH7knWB-qqIlejO2U2NkVEhvFdnfNuwRGvKWfyAWJDNXVZXBqncSRS5vwBGsSgan2_P5JnWsMYNEfFbx-d9m47yxX49Q1nKIy7vfNjr9IiYSHB5BZ0qj462vrk/s320/Diagnostic%20Kits%20for%20pregnant%20tribal%20women.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204218993553183606.post-88124913071815164232023-09-04T02:23:00.030-07:002023-09-21T02:46:51.617-07:00Eitan Bernath at Gabriel Project Mumbai!<p>We had such a fantastic time with American celebrity chef, entertainer, author, social media influencer and TV personality <a href="https://www.eitanbernath.com/" target="_blank">Eitan Bernath</a> who came to Gabriel Project Mumbai (GPM) to learn from and cook with the cooking staff! </p><p>Eitan learned about the nutritious locally sourced meals prepared by the GPM kitchen as a mulnutrition intervention for 120 infants diagnosed with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). This incredible program works closely with local government health depoartments like the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and the Nutritional Rehabilitation Center (NRC) to treat malnutrition from a grassroots level. </p><p>Appointed a High Level Supporter to the United Nations World Food Programme in February 2023, called a "culinary darling" by The New York Times and "the internet’s most delightful chef" by Oprah Magazine, Eitan is the youngest ever individual named to the Forbes 30 Under 30: Food and Drink list. We thank Eitan and his parents for spending the day with us in the villages of Mokhada and to see the work Gabriel Project does with the tribal communities. </p><p>To donate to Gabriel Project Mumbai's malnutrition program: <a href="https://rootfunding.com/campaigns/eradicating_infant_malnutrition">https://rootfunding.com/campaigns/eradicating_infant_malnutrition</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; the remote tribal village area of area of Mokhada, Maharashtra, last month,
they hoped to garner some local interest and support. What they got was wild
enthusiasm from both locals and those traveling through – and a public
clamoring for more.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhthHHeIxmAs9M6Mia56IWw1cs1zDncMe7YiF5Ly1afd3RIWJW1b-9rg-gZL-g0cHSn5gjpjSaRA7kXS8SAznLRffBKkQXToC-tN0OaDjbRH85cvvQIaLrdXxGa05j5_w99DWg1rd1w56UKG4WiTo9aZvOXBCIiNqjuv1iGCbFeO8lz0O46kV3AmVp_/s1280/gaja1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="1280" height="144" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhthHHeIxmAs9M6Mia56IWw1cs1zDncMe7YiF5Ly1afd3RIWJW1b-9rg-gZL-g0cHSn5gjpjSaRA7kXS8SAznLRffBKkQXToC-tN0OaDjbRH85cvvQIaLrdXxGa05j5_w99DWg1rd1w56UKG4WiTo9aZvOXBCIiNqjuv1iGCbFeO8lz0O46kV3AmVp_/s320/gaja1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>By the end of the first week, crowds gathering at the café –
which is located on the main road artery in the district – the food was a hit!</p><p>The Gaja Café (‘Gaja’ being the Sanskrit word for
‘elephant’, an auspicious animal found in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain scriptural
texts) was born as a response to the challenges faced by indigenous
communities, who often endure disproportionately high levels of unemployment
and poverty. The café was opened in order to catalyze positive change, uplift
marginalized communities, provide jobs and serve some great tasting meals.</p><p>“This venture holds immense potential, with its focus on
generating livelihood opportunities,</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLvz-O1wsb6dqUCx7D1x1E9xY7sVvwysxptXn-oZMYbOR-o7EPP-x-0A0GEsnudNhxDmxxqxYme9Hz16oYJ8uiieo2VevW5z_OXj1PT718ezporK05nAh9afYVbr-MsvDvpUxGTy0ujffD8klOHrE2lqUX0fiXMr1ZvGy4FG_akc0i0RvuNpLfTlEd/s1280/Gaja4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="1280" height="144" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLvz-O1wsb6dqUCx7D1x1E9xY7sVvwysxptXn-oZMYbOR-o7EPP-x-0A0GEsnudNhxDmxxqxYme9Hz16oYJ8uiieo2VevW5z_OXj1PT718ezporK05nAh9afYVbr-MsvDvpUxGTy0ujffD8klOHrE2lqUX0fiXMr1ZvGy4FG_akc0i0RvuNpLfTlEd/s320/Gaja4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> diversifying revenue streams, showcasing

initiatives. This innovative approach aims to safeguard against funding
fluctuations and increase the organization's impact on the ground.”<p></p><p>The Gaja Café, which offers a menu of Indian breakfast,
lunch, snacks, health drinks and dessert items provides livelihood
opportunities for six community members, including three cooks and three
servers who have been FOSTAC (Food Safety Training & Certification) trained

GPM’s Bal Balwaan/Healthy Child Malnutrition Intervention program that aims to
treat infants diagnosed with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).</p><p>“What I love most about the Gaja Café is that it draws

healthcare, livelihood, and nutrition – while helping GPM become more
economically sustainable,” explains Jacob Sztokman, Founder of GPM, “By reinvesting
the cafe profits into education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects, we
ensure that the benefits extend far beyond the cafe itself. It's like turning
dosas into development!"<p></p><p>The cafe also showcases the rich culinary heritage of the
local tribal communities, offering visitors an authentic taste of traditional
tribal cuisine along with Western fare. Darshan Kharpade, Gaja Café supervisor
emphasizes the cultural significance: "This café not only satisfies
culinary enthusiasts but also celebrates and preserves the indigenous knowledge
and culinary traditions of our tribal community. It fosters cultural exchange,
appreciation, and a deeper understanding of our communities.” Darshan adds, “a
main focus of the Gaja Café is to serve healthy food and the hygienic,
zero-waste kitchen is environmentally friendly” with a compost bay in clear
view outside the kitchen. Additionally, all food ingredients are locally
sourced providing economic support to local farmers.</p><p>This initiative represents a paradigm shift in international
development efforts, combining economic empowerment, cultural preservation, and
sustainable progress.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIFw2zsdZheB8TcLUD4GTI1WmCN_LHXTG5j8yQAv_lWqd91Eap7WNAIL9VlEiqQnxohf3IwXhBC4n5iBphFBxnjQwaV1whU6XGC_eVrSns-qE8tASpgluM2VAY-I9yXWydljFN7zEDmQrBBPvAwBcaommUTjBdvdb3tQH9SA5QyjPtE5Ck6UH1R3mp/s1600/Gaja2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1149" data-original-width="1600" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIFw2zsdZheB8TcLUD4GTI1WmCN_LHXTG5j8yQAv_lWqd91Eap7WNAIL9VlEiqQnxohf3IwXhBC4n5iBphFBxnjQwaV1whU6XGC_eVrSns-qE8tASpgluM2VAY-I9yXWydljFN7zEDmQrBBPvAwBcaommUTjBdvdb3tQH9SA5QyjPtE5Ck6UH1R3mp/s320/Gaja2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>The Gaja Café is expected to create a ripple effect,

She barely had enough food in the house for herself, but what she did have, she gave to her infant, often foregoing eating herself. At six months old, her baby was already suffering from malnourishment, as was she.</p><p>Jayshree approached GPM three months ago, and we immediately began treating her child through our Bal Balwaan/Healthy Child Infant Malnourishment Program, providing the baby with supplements and nutrients – while also making sure that Jayshree herself had nutritious food to eat.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguhpqPFC1RDZuOD8wfprzZ_CjLecU6maDJ6Gcu3PInlef-a6HVakfTHnAhZp_QqHM0LnodUBKfOYTgEX1eT_lI3Q6d0rQaFYMC3CwzUJok4jWhjpZTHRwiIJaNBhxQHRiLk3Lju-DDRGMPKPAjZpFSJYzXz5fXZLtsla3NhL3iAHtkKzgzbFCxz60j/s1005/Balbalwaan%20April%202022%20(2).jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1005" data-original-width="1001" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguhpqPFC1RDZuOD8wfprzZ_CjLecU6maDJ6Gcu3PInlef-a6HVakfTHnAhZp_QqHM0LnodUBKfOYTgEX1eT_lI3Q6d0rQaFYMC3CwzUJok4jWhjpZTHRwiIJaNBhxQHRiLk3Lju-DDRGMPKPAjZpFSJYzXz5fXZLtsla3NhL3iAHtkKzgzbFCxz60j/s320/Balbalwaan%20April%202022%20(2).jpg" width="319" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>But we realized that we needed to do more. Mothers must also eat, and Jayshree wanted to be strong enough to be able to provide food for herself and her family. Jayshree enrolled in one of our livelihood programs so that she can now earn enough money to make sure that both she and her baby will have what to eat.</p><p>At nearly one year old, Jayshree’s baby is now flourishing – as is Jayshree. And Jayshree is not alone.</p><p>In the last 12 months over 300 children have been treated for Severe Acute Malnutrition, 75% moving out of the danger zone of severely malnourished…</p><p>I am so humbled by Jayshree’s courage and strength, and I am proud that GPM has been a part of this mother’s journey of devotion to her family. </p><p><b>The mothers who want a computer education – like their children</b></p><p>Six months ago, a group of mothers from Kalwa whose children learn in our school, the Joshua Greenberger Learning Center, approached us with a special request. They said that the computer classes that we were delivering to their children was having a wonderful effect, that the kids were really enjoying it – and that they wanted to learn computers, too! Even though none of the women own computers, they understand the power of computer literacy and its role in gaining employment and breaking the cycle of poverty. They were determined to do whatever it takes to make changes in their lives, for themselves and for their families.</p><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnsx-O6ooRONbLxRxC7NEIDXyjO7-nSbQlOOcR9oJo2WIq14OE0mC3FECGBOUy9VT1FsEtPnGWnB7BYmF5G_OUBALEH0Y-9jIc4qrAVRXSZl44xX3Qb3OoqgtffXfncXk19kxu9E8rgIPnrqo53wtIdZ1n85_SIPwQ9DEw3ZhY0QBBqAHmOo32z2hy/s1322/mother%20computers.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="740" data-original-width="1322" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnsx-O6ooRONbLxRxC7NEIDXyjO7-nSbQlOOcR9oJo2WIq14OE0mC3FECGBOUy9VT1FsEtPnGWnB7BYmF5G_OUBALEH0Y-9jIc4qrAVRXSZl44xX3Qb3OoqgtffXfncXk19kxu9E8rgIPnrqo53wtIdZ1n85_SIPwQ9DEw3ZhY0QBBqAHmOo32z2hy/w400-h224/mother%20computers.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>As a result of their initiative and gumption, GPM started computer literacy classes for women. Two batches of six women each meet weekly at the GPM Ida Zatz Leberman Computer Lab. Its early days to see what the effects of the computer classes will have on the lives of these mothers it is a phenomenal story about mothers coming together to support their children. <p></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204218993553183606.post-8307954556731754552023-04-30T07:01:00.005-07:002023-04-30T07:34:29.064-07:00Gabriel Project Mumbai honored by the government in Mokhada<p><span style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: "inherit", serif; font-size: 11.5pt;"></span></p><div style="text-align: right;"><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Gabriel Project Mumbai was honored to

As part of the state-wide Maharashtra Oral Cancer Campaign (MOCC), Gabriel Project Mumbai and the Indian Dental Association (IDA), provided life-saving oral health awareness and treatment in 40 remote underserved hamlets in the Mokhada sub-district. </p><p>As part of the MOCC, specialist dentists and doctors provided services free of cost and additional referrals for specific complex treatments. Of the 2000 people participating in the program, 84 patients with signs of oral cancer were given cancer biopsies. These biopsies were sent to laboratories for analysis. Additional dental care activities based at the GPM ‘Mokhada Community Health Center’ included home visits, blood samples, scaling, extractions, and GIC restoration (filling of cavities and fixing tooth deformities).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaGGOzNw5wzD7TqZ6v3cwLBulUSWnXdn-X8sHrscqUG0Zym3EzYEt2vFcYFGED2_Y4pad46qcWQRO3t4xj1r0rXER-NdeB9-NKvwoc4p6QM7VNZkeacsWYXEP8--2baiAINXyuUWyDgv8KlGHAIN6dHA8xYyqv_2kT6bmThLRzMUZKL5fepLAm-adR/s1600/IDA%203.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="899" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaGGOzNw5wzD7TqZ6v3cwLBulUSWnXdn-X8sHrscqUG0Zym3EzYEt2vFcYFGED2_Y4pad46qcWQRO3t4xj1r0rXER-NdeB9-NKvwoc4p6QM7VNZkeacsWYXEP8--2baiAINXyuUWyDgv8KlGHAIN6dHA8xYyqv_2kT6bmThLRzMUZKL5fepLAm-adR/s320/IDA%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p>

Seasons of long drought are now being followed by intense monsoons that have ushered in harsh flooding, destruction of property, animal attacks, health care shortfalls, and relentless food insecurity.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQZUOYMsIZcaCeND8SLrUkRaIqjqdTQIxvzOMAmiiRrCiEEOWtoCIh5rLt2TWS7KvrK6dVoIMe3WedcR5-vZyvPcB8YWzjILmeARMpIPF6T2gwK2D1xVvwqRQqtW0e6JcWTQHXDSFsodMYOEjqE2L5p0B2royn8_NrwPrloB1MlpfP-QN9MdAUn9u6/s875/emergency%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="875" data-original-width="652" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQZUOYMsIZcaCeND8SLrUkRaIqjqdTQIxvzOMAmiiRrCiEEOWtoCIh5rLt2TWS7KvrK6dVoIMe3WedcR5-vZyvPcB8YWzjILmeARMpIPF6T2gwK2D1xVvwqRQqtW0e6JcWTQHXDSFsodMYOEjqE2L5p0B2royn8_NrwPrloB1MlpfP-QN9MdAUn9u6/s320/emergency%202.jpg" width="238" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Severe flooding is ravaging the community. Mokhada, a tribal district that has hundreds of village hamlets located in remote jungles or mountainsides in almost isolated conditions. We expanded to this remote rural area as the 59 villages there were experiencing extreme poverty with severe child malnutrition, starvation and with little access to any healthcare! With 40% migration from villages in Maharashtra to Mumbai, many of the residents of Mokhada had migrated to the slums in Mumbai and Thane in a last move of desperation in the face of extreme poverty.</p><p>We set up food distributions, nutrition programs and emergency health treatments. </p><p>While we know that the food distributions helped significantly with hunger, we quickly began to realize that nutritional needs are just the beginning. We kept seeing sick, unhealthy people with no access to any kind of medical professionals, which meant that emergency medical needs, communicable diseases, and treatable conditions like dysentery were causing high rates of illness and death. It also meant that people with chronic illnesses or noncommunicable diseases, like high blood pressure or diabetes, had no chance of getting better or controlling their symptoms. After countless discussions and research in the region, we decided to open a Healthcare Center located in the heart of the Mokhada district. It is a vital component in advancing a long-term vision for health and hygiene for the members of the community. </p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_28XtqQR3xaQ12hJA1YsO3keLs5H2dPlQwdqjkt7efOstLqcDLbD7jc2PwzC3R-orjfmwqqGjywcNDKl57gc2yklAKNUwLmACkR32SxuLSq4eAPZ6by3N_gP4Rv_6jGlKLuzLT_j3Ss2CNLH22aa6kv8vNBP70PvmuiEatjhmzuIa_foznll3NnB4/s1933/kobbi3a.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="985" data-original-width="1933" height="163" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_28XtqQR3xaQ12hJA1YsO3keLs5H2dPlQwdqjkt7efOstLqcDLbD7jc2PwzC3R-orjfmwqqGjywcNDKl57gc2yklAKNUwLmACkR32SxuLSq4eAPZ6by3N_gP4Rv_6jGlKLuzLT_j3Ss2CNLH22aa6kv8vNBP70PvmuiEatjhmzuIa_foznll3NnB4/s320/kobbi3a.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">With Israel Consul General, Mr Kobbi Shoshani outside the Mokhada Community Healthcare Center</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br />The beautiful five-room medical center we built on a 1.5-acre central location in Mokhada is a vibrant center for health in the district. The other consulting rooms lead to a large hall used for patients and for after-hours training of medical staff. The medical center has been visited by the Deputy Collector of Palghar, Ms Ayoushi Singh and we are partnering with the Dr. Vasantrao Pawar Medical College in Nashik for ongoing medical programs at the medical center. Recently, we completed a large-scale oral health screening with the Indian Dental Association and a menstrual hygiene project with the Citizens Association for Child Rights (CACR) including a distribution of sanitary pads to 3200 adolescent girls. The medical center also works closely with government health bodies like the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS), Mokhada Rural Hospital and the Nutrition Rehabilitation Center (NRC).<p></p><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioSe9u_flNFloe_fXPBaf1JD7W0GIVjjFiPa8aTCr2BgsfLBKn78JmzlRs8OL5YJ4ItU_milLmYbb8_NTQ2Nvbg4qIrl_g9QN5AfEgtJHGCnEywtuzNkaGHI0C57wyiHh5UDVA4c3XEMTnlBIWom0qpZdle7mPTetZYP0A7KUNxX_xJatApR0eayjt/s1280/Mokhada%20Healthcare%20Center%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="590" data-original-width="1280" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioSe9u_flNFloe_fXPBaf1JD7W0GIVjjFiPa8aTCr2BgsfLBKn78JmzlRs8OL5YJ4ItU_milLmYbb8_NTQ2Nvbg4qIrl_g9QN5AfEgtJHGCnEywtuzNkaGHI0C57wyiHh5UDVA4c3XEMTnlBIWom0qpZdle7mPTetZYP0A7KUNxX_xJatApR0eayjt/s320/Mokhada%20Healthcare%20Center%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNHrhTAQENmynE85Vg92JTukia9Em1M3Lxx8kXi5OzZm4qPT0_mImXYwzYQSRB3SQmpiY4LF1_djGq_1dcb0gVWK5EhKB2KHO4ufLNT14TdFVAzV5bvEa36MFV_EbckdnNnSEWIPtjIQIcCgF-1Z1liyeaZTJkz-XySeq1mNKGzhjSdkrULEweiB5Q/s1280/Mokhada%20Healthcare%20Center%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="590" data-original-width="1280" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNHrhTAQENmynE85Vg92JTukia9Em1M3Lxx8kXi5OzZm4qPT0_mImXYwzYQSRB3SQmpiY4LF1_djGq_1dcb0gVWK5EhKB2KHO4ufLNT14TdFVAzV5bvEa36MFV_EbckdnNnSEWIPtjIQIcCgF-1Z1liyeaZTJkz-XySeq1mNKGzhjSdkrULEweiB5Q/s320/Mokhada%20Healthcare%20Center%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxTS77XFRaeI0us3s7RA-cfigiaqidB1e9bXESr2Oz8Yz8drfRCo1LLb7yhYzoZMMs6AOs5IlyxnoraVBD17hUllEJAdhaGIaqsjaORLqCGGfVtZs-2ua6P1rxzMsfh9rncl8m0EJqUjVj4o8pr8_tNnZNa2RsfkV5I0TWk1NW0Ej0AJTL92chqY6G/s1599/vaccination%20Oct%2028%20Kalwa%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="899" data-original-width="1599" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxTS77XFRaeI0us3s7RA-cfigiaqidB1e9bXESr2Oz8Yz8drfRCo1LLb7yhYzoZMMs6AOs5IlyxnoraVBD17hUllEJAdhaGIaqsjaORLqCGGfVtZs-2ua6P1rxzMsfh9rncl8m0EJqUjVj4o8pr8_tNnZNa2RsfkV5I0TWk1NW0Ej0AJTL92chqY6G/s320/vaccination%20Oct%2028%20Kalwa%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><div><br /></div><p><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204218993553183606.post-71806266417527308712021-05-26T03:44:00.006-07:002021-05-26T03:46:46.453-07:00COVID-19 emergency help from the UJA-Federation of New York<p>GPM is grateful for a $45,000 grant from the UJA-Federation of New York towards GPM’s grassroots COVID-19 Emergency Response in the slums of Mumbai and the rural tribal villages in Palghar, Maharashtra, just north of Mumbai. As India is currently in the throes of a devastating surge of COVID-19 cases, including severe spikes in critical cases and fatalities, we are on the ground responding to and mitigating critical needs in the areas we operate, particularly within the hard-hit indigenous rural communities. Anil Jadhav, one of our village supervisors, reports that, “Every second house in the villages has someone suffering with COVID-19." <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEauZdszi4ttsROAJOIbIowLjCeWjKExSx83IkWf6yL0ArycGezOKzpwaP4dLWzGcMvEk7vwox5i4cfBIA3FJ9EwZhTkhVSGaS3gUf5k8pfuSi7_-eya2XC6-F132lTY0V6DFjSaCdahc/s2612/in+hospital.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1204" data-original-width="2612" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEauZdszi4ttsROAJOIbIowLjCeWjKExSx83IkWf6yL0ArycGezOKzpwaP4dLWzGcMvEk7vwox5i4cfBIA3FJ9EwZhTkhVSGaS3gUf5k8pfuSi7_-eya2XC6-F132lTY0V6DFjSaCdahc/s320/in+hospital.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /></div><div>Our COVID-19 emergency response plan is innovative, far-reaching, and multi-pronged in order to address the cross-cutting challenges in halting the spread of COVID-19, and as always will continue to focus on providing the necessary care to low income families living in hard to reach locations. </div><div><br /></div><div><br />Together with our partners at IsraAID, we are working to extend support and strengthen resilience of communities within remote villages, and increase capacity of the local government health care infrastructure. We are coordinating with the local health authorities, including the District Health Office (DHO) to ensure rural hospitals and COVID-19 Care Centers have the medical equipment, supplies, and medical professionals needed to serve a rural population of nearly 4.2 million people. Currently there is about 1 doctor to every 50-100 patients in the areas we are working. </div><div><br /></div><div>Together in partnership with community leaders we are extending our community outreach work, providing important COVID-19 information to communities, and emergency groceries and health and hygiene kits to those in in quarantine. We will also be setting up medical camps within the villages for both testing, and more importantly increasing access to vaccinations. The community outreach program will reach an estimated 70,000 people.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>
<br /><br />
<p></p>
<p>“Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly
nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow.
Only through right education can a better order of society be built up.” - Jawaharlal Nehru</p>
<p>Education is a basic human right – a right that many in
developed countries take for granted. It is vital for a country’s development
and ensuring future opportunities for communities around the world. Education is
so essential to development that it is included as the 4th UN Sustainable
Development Goal, aiming to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and
promote lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030. </p>
<p>January 24th is the International day of Education, and in India it is also National Girl Child Day.
Both days were established to raise awareness of the disparities when it comes
to accessing inclusive and quality education. 17 percent of all children in
India drop out before finishing secondary school, and the number increases to 24
percent amongst poorer rural communities1, and typically girls leave school at a
younger age than boys. The most common reasons for children dropping out of
school is poverty, and the need to earn extra income to support the family.
Additionally, girls start to miss school when they begin menstruation, finding
that many schools do not have appropriate sanitation facilities to support them.
The start of menstruation may also lead to girls dropping out under societal and
familial pressure to be married. There are a number of reasons why children, and
especially girls may drop out of school, which is why 24th January is so
important. It is a day to highlight the importance of education and to remember
why we should be fighting for equal access, and good quality education for all
children. </p>
<p>Education is one of Gabriel Project Mumbai’s core principles. GPM
knows that unless there is a way to keep children in school, the cycle of
poverty will continue. The reality of the situation in the rural villages and
slums means that many children do not have access to adequate resources or
facilities. There is also a lack of trained teachers in these communities, and
growing class sizes, meaning that the student to teacher ratio in some schools
is 60:1. These are just some of the reasons why GPM has created a space where
children can come and learn safely and with the right level of support. In the
Kalwa slum, GPM runs a school which employs and trains teachers from the local
community. These teachers know the students well and can identify which families
are most in need of further support. The students enrolled at the school are
given lessons in addition to the time they spend at the government schools. Here
they have a clean space to learn in, and smaller class sizes to make sure their
needs are being met. They are also provided with a daily cooked nutritious meal
and regular health check-ups because statistically children who are hungry or
sick perform worse in school and may drop out. GPM also runs schools in the
tribal villages as well as providing additional staff in the government schools
in the area, where access to education is even more restricted and without GPM
many children would not be able to attend school at all.</p>

>One of the GPM Love2Learn classes engaging in experiential learning with a
volunteer</i
>
<p>When I was working for GPM, I got to see first-hand the amazing and thoughtful
initiatives they run. I was working as an intern and was welcomed into the
communities with open arms. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, and despite
the language barriers, I formed true connections. One of my main roles was to
support and run programmes for the international visitors who come to volunteer
with GPM. Many of the visitors come and teach in the schools, and I loved seeing
the children’s faces light up when young people from all over the world wanted
to come and spend time with them. The visitors run creative, informal style
classes that introduce the children to problem solving and creative thinking,
without relying on the textbook. This is an aspect of school that I definitely
took for granted, and because of strains on the Indian school system, often
children do not have the possibility in the classroom to think outside the box.</p>
<p>I have had the opportunity to see the extraordinary impact GPM’s work has on the
children and their families, and it was incredible to be part of this fantastic,
thoughtful organisation. All of the work that GPM does with the school children
helps them to feel valued and supported, and the results of the students have
improved. From clean learning spaces and additional teachers, to visitors who
bring new and fresh ideas, GPM works tirelessly to give these children a better
future. In a year when the coronavirus pandemic has intensified the disparity in
access to education, and further highlighted how much we all take learning for
granted, supporting GPM and the vital work that they do couldn’t be more
important.</p>

<p>Meiron Avidan was born in South Africa and grew up in London. She studied
Sociology and Social Policy for her undergraduate degree, and when she
graduated she knew she wanted to work abroad to further her understanding of
international development work and have the opportunity to immerse herself in
a new culture. Meiron worked for GPM as a development intern from September
2019 until July 2020. Since September 2020, she has been studying for a
masters in development studies, with the hope of starting a career in
